7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS

RUTA NUBES DEL MACIZO, COPEY - LONDRES DE QUEPOS.

Description:

Los Santos Forest Reserve: Comprises some 63,000 hectares of primary and secondary cloud forests, coffee plantations, and pastures. The characteristic landscape of this space presents a mosaic where natural and cultural ecosystems coexist, characterized by high biological diversity, which imbues it with a natural flavor along its many routes. The visitor will be able to enjoy the various trails of the Savegre, a set of attractions that range from the clear and noisy waters of the mountain streams to the peaceful oak forests at altitude, and include the daily activities of the picturesque rural communities in the forest. This area comprises one of the most biologically diverse places in the country, and is, among other functions, a key link between the Manuel Antonio and Tapantí national parks. The trails are narrow, with slippery stretches or sections that require attention due to the abundance of obstacles, including rocks, mud, dense vegetation, as well as cliffs and ravines. The terrain is broken. The guide may have to use his machete to clear some of the path. Several shallow but wet streams are crossed, but this difficulty is usually rewarded by a nearby waterfall, of which there are many, as this place is literally an oasis of great importance for watershed conservation and biodiversity preservation.

It is a habitat for the quetzal and other beautiful birds such as the trogon. It is also home to hummingbirds, guans, multicolored butterflies, frogs, white-faced and red monkeys, peccaries, foxes, raccoons, coyotes, pizotes, mountain mice, and felines such as jaguars, cougars, and lions. On land, the presence of many tapirs is unquestionable; their tracks are constantly seen on the road, as they like to eat the so-called culantrillo de danta, a plant that is abundant in these areas. There are also snakes, such as the timber rattlesnake, the copperhead, and the coral snake. As far as flora is concerned, this reserve contains very tall trees and many epiphytic plants (orchids, bromeliads, and ferns). Here you can find: oak, oak, oak, deer’s horn, myrtle, myrtle, magnolia, and jaul. There are also species such as murta, tirrá, guaba, quina, horquetilla, papayillo, cucaracho, quizarrá, duraznillo, picarillo, palmitos, palo de paja, tree ferns, rabo de mico, copey, cirrí cañuela, lorito, cipresillo, sombrilla de pobre, cedrillo, arrayancillo, candelillo and nance macho. The forest is characterized by high humidity and cool temperatures, as well as frequent cloud cover.
