Located in the northeastern corner of Costa Rica, in the province of Limón, Barra del Colorado is a small and isolated community that is part of the Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest protected areas in the country. Located between canals, tropical rainforests and the Caribbean coast, this locality is characterized by its exuberant biodiversity, its natural landscapes and its quiet and remote environment.
Accessible only by river or air, Barra del Colorado is surrounded by rivers, wetlands, rainforests and swamps, making it a key destination for nature lovers, sport fishing (especially tarpon), and ecotourism. The community, mostly composed of fishermen and tour guides, is small but cozy, with houses built on stilts and a simple, traditional lifestyle.
The region is home to a wide variety of species, including manatees, caimans, monkeys, turtles, jaguars and hundreds of birds. It is also an important biological corridor that connects to Tortuguero National Park, which reinforces its ecological importance.
Barra del Colorado is a place where modernity has barely arrived, allowing visitors to experience nature in its purest state, surrounded by jungle sounds, starry skies and a local culture deeply connected to its natural environment.
