Cerro Urán is situated in the Chirripó district, in the Turrialba canton, Cartago province, and is one of the highest points in Costa Rica. It is part of the Cordillera de Talamanca and is located within the Chirripó National Park. It has an altitude of 3660 m
From Cerro Chirripó, it is approximately 5 km to the northwest, and it is visible from its summit, as well as vice versa. To access it, you can use the conventional route from San Gerardo de Rivas to Refugio Base Crestones, then to Cerro Chirripó, and from its summit, proceed to Cerro Urán.
Due to the type of hike, you should arrive the day before and register before 3:00 pm at the National Park Administrative Office in San Gerardo de Rivas. Then, go to the community of Herradura de Rivas and visit the tourist office located in the centre of the community, on the south side of the school. Cancel your right-of-way on private farms, as well as your use of gas and utensils.
Use of gas and cooking utensils (at the Paso de los Indios lodge). This process is necessary because it involves a restricted passage; so, you will need to be up to date with all the relevant legal requirements.
At the end of the process of requirements continue your way to the Ficus Reserve where you will stay the night before the tour, the local guide makes a presentation and talk about everything you need to know for the hike and in turn you can enjoy dinner and the hotel facilities to prepare everything for the next day.
Lodging at Reserva Ficus
Breakfast is served at 4:00 am, and from there you will be prepared to start this adventure full of adrenaline and strength—departure at 4:30 am with transport from the Ficus Reserve to about 3 km where the hike begins.

After enjoying the 13-kilometre hike in approximately 6 to 7 hours, you will arrive at the Refugio Paso de los Indios, at 3300 metres above sea level, which is described as a kind of shelter made of tin roofs, where you can spend the night and continue the next day.

Today, we depart for the Urán hill, located at 3660 meters above sea level. We coordinate our departure for 3:00 am, where we will walk a total of 8 kilometers round trip, experiencing the thrill of walking in the dark to contemplate the star-filled sky and witness a different landscape.
Once this hike is finished, breakfast is prepared at approximately 8:00 a.m., and we proceed with departure from the Refugio del Paso de los Indios, starting the return trip at 9:00 a.m. and covering roughly 13 kilometres to Herradura. Here the adventure ends, and you will be able to continue to your next destination.
